LULITO’S SUITE
PART 1
PART 2
PART 3
Lulito’s Suite is a piano suite based a children’s story about four-year old boy Lulito, filled with great imagination and a contagious joy for living, and Charlie Canillas, his favorite toy and best friend, as they venture into the world for the first time.
The work comprises 11 scenes with the most joyful adventures, from eating a jellybean and shrinking in the backyard to rescuing Charlie from a dark cave with a snoring bear (his mom’s bedroom at night).
In the process of composing the piece, I realized that I was treating it as a thesis-driven essay where the same musical elements were present and developed throughout the piece. Close to the end of the work, Charlie goes missing and Lulito’s reality is outlined: Lulito’s parents are going through a divorce and the toy is actually the outlet of this reality.
It is truly a celebration of imagination and innocence. I wrote the music in the summer of 2015 through a research grant I received from the Dean’s Office at Luther College.
