A MAN AMONG AMENS
The title comes from a Punch Brothers’ song called “Familiarity.” The piece is about questioning. A man Among Amens is a person among established truths. In the beginning, the person wrestles with hard questions. The harmony, which ascends bit by bit, describes this journey. I use all twelve notes as bass notes depicting him searching everywhere for the answer. In the end, the realization that there are no straight-forward answers, but only better questions. And love. And the risk of going out there and exploring oneself. This is an homage to two bands that have marked me: Punch Brothers and Bacilos. The first theme comes from PB’s Familiarity, from their album Phosphorescent Blues; the second theme comes from Bacilos’ Solo un Segundo, from their album Caraluna. Other musical influences include Chick Corea and Pat Metheny.
